How the Universe Works

SN 8 | EP 9 | Earth's Death Orbit

Earth is taking us on the ride of our lives. Our world is spinning on its tilted axis and wobbling as it orbits around the sun. Not only that, Earth is careening through the Milky Way -- not in a simple circle, but in a weird twisted, looping corkscrew, weaving in and out of the galactic plane. Every part of this voyage through the cosmos shapes life, from creation to extinction. It's a trip 4.6 billion years in the making, and as the Milky Way is dragged to a mysterious area in space known as the Great Attractor, the end of the trip could result in the Earth being ejected out of the galaxy all together.
